Exploiting the connection

Dr.O'Dea has experienced considerable success treating patients afflicted by a wide range of brain & mind-based issues, at times even overcoming the obstacles of treatment resistance & treatment failure, while facilitating psychiatrists to lower the doses of psychoactive drugs they are being compelled to prescribe,

- - - as well as their accompanying risks & side-effects.

Permanently altering brain circuits

At times psychiatric problems which haven't surfaced for decades, only to be abruptly triggered by the hormonal accompaniments of an intervening stressful episode can be eliminated semi-permanently or even permanently by reversing the underlying hormonal disruptions and re-calibrating neural systems, a classic example of what is called a "systems' effect". This is real cure as opposed to perpetual therapy, & is far preferable to having to constantly force the psychiatric genie back into the bottle through the use of never-ending, forceful therapies.

All of this material supporting an hormonal approach is not just about laboratory research & sterile theory, it represents thirty years of concrete evidence gleaned from the sweat of clinical experience obtained at the coal-face of clinical care in the doctor's office.  And thanks to its open-minded, enlightened perspective, it actually works.

Science-based but progressive

Although clearly nontraditional, O'Dea's methods remain purely scientific & they do not by any means belong with the anti-rational field of 'alternative' medicine.  He uses a novel paradigm whereas alternative medicine has no paradigm whatsoever.  His approach is based on the scientifically-proven, massive yet oft-ignored influences of the adrenal, thyroidal & sexual hormones on the brain, and thereby the mind.  These influences operate not only over the long term but far more dynamically from moment to vital moment, as the rapidly acting effects of these hormones define the harmonics of normal & abnormal mental functioning, while in genetically-prone or environmentally conditioned, particularly vulnerable persons they drive & support episodes of anxiety, depression & even florid psychosis.

In real life

In the real world we see the obvious results of the hormonal connection in terms of depression being linked with low testosterone levels in men; post-partum mental problems recurring on a predictable basis in women after they have delivered their babies, and the emotional storms that occur in women when their hormonal profiles are set in flux, such as during the teen years & around the menopause.  Women with the hormonal disorder known as polycystic ovary syndrome are also prone to mental aberrations such as psychosis, OCD & bipolar disorder, to a degree that is greater than in hormonally normal women.

The crucial point of all this is that if hormones have the power to make particularly vulnerable patients mentally ill, as we undoubtedly know they can, then fine-tuning or correcting these hormones, in terms of their balances & their patterns, their surfeits & deficiencies, can have the power to reduce the dosages of, improve the effectiveness of or completely eliminate the need for their psychiatric drugs, & to make them better. in the process, at times permanently.
